Most cleanliness complaints do not come from lazy cleaners. They come from a single, quiet misunderstanding: treating the turnover clean as if it were a deep clean. They are two different jobs, on two different schedules, with two different goals — and confusing them is how a well-run property slowly slides from five stars to four.

A turnover clean is about speed and consistency A turnover clean happens between every guest. It is fast, repeatable and focused on what the next guest will see and touch: fresh linen, sanitised surfaces, restocked supplies, a neutral scent. Done well, it makes the property look immaculate on arrival. But by design it does not reach behind the fridge, inside the oven, into the grout lines or under the bed. There is rarely time, and there does not need to be — every single turnover.

A turnover clean keeps a property guest-ready. A deep clean keeps it guest-ready a year from now.

A deep clean is about prevention A deep clean is the scheduled, slower work that a turnover can never reach — descaling the showerhead, scrubbing grout, cleaning the oven, washing curtains, moving furniture, checking detectors. It is preventive maintenance, not reactive cleaning. Skip it and the property still looks clean for a while. Then the grout greys, the showerhead clogs, the oven smells, and a guest finally notices — usually in a review.

Why the distinction protects your rating When the two are blurred, one of two things happens. Either cleaners are quietly expected to do deep-clean work in a turnover window — so corners get cut and the standard becomes unpredictable — or the deep clean simply never gets booked, because the property "always looks fine." Both end in the same place: a slow decline that shows up in your cleanliness score, then your overall rating, then your search visibility.

The fix is simple. Keep them separate. Run a written turnover checklist on every changeover, and block a deep clean into the calendar every four to twelve weeks depending on occupancy. Add photo verification so nothing is left to memory, and a final inspection before each arrival as your safety net.
